Here are five helpful tips for clients to prepare for their newborn photography session
1. Schedule the Session Early
Ideally, book your newborn photography session while you’re still pregnant, ideally between 32-36 weeks. Newborns are best photographed within the first 10 days of life when they are still very sleepy and flexible. This helps capture those peaceful, posed moments that make newborn photography so special.
2. Keep Baby Fed and Comfortable
Ensure that your newborn is well-fed and comfortable before the session. A full belly will help your baby stay sleepy and calm during the shoot, which is key for those adorable curled-up poses. Consider feeding right before the session starts to help avoid fussiness.
3. Plan for a Relaxed, Flexible Session
Newborn sessions are typically around 2-3 hours long to allow for feedings, soothing, and breaks. Make sure to leave plenty of time and avoid rushing. It’s also helpful to bring along anything that soothes your baby, such as a pacifier, a favorite blanket, or white noise.
4. Dress Comfortably and Simple
For the best photos, keep your newborn in simple, neutral-colored clothing (or a diaper, depending on the look you want). Avoid clothing with logos, patterns, or distractions. If you’re planning on being in some of the photos, choose soft, neutral tones that complement your baby without drawing attention away from them.
5. Prepare for a Warm Studio Environment
Babies love warmth! The studio (or your home if you’re having an in-home session) will be kept warm to help your newborn stay comfortable during the session. Dress yourself in layers so you can adjust if you feel too warm, and make sure to bring some extra blankets for both you and the baby.
With these tips, you’ll be able to make the most of your newborn session and create lasting memories you’ll treasure forever!
